About the Scholarship:

Mary Marsh of the City of Leduc established a scholarship fund in honour of the memory of her late husband, Bruce Marsh who made a significant contribution to the musical education of students in Leduc and district.  The Board of Education, Black Gold Regional Division No. 18 agreed to be the administrator of the fund.

The scholarship will be awarded annually to assist a graduate of Leduc Composite High School who is enrolled in the second year of a Bachelor of Education program, preferably with a major in music, at a university within the Province of Alberta.

Amount to be Awarded:

If the successful applicant is majoring in music, an amount of $1,200 will be awarded to that individual.  (If the successful applicant is enrolled in the Elementary program, proof of applied musical training and interest will be required.)

If the successful applicant is majoring in an area other than music, the amount awarded will be $1,000.

Only one award will be made in any one year.

Eligibility:

To be eligible, the student must:

  • have graduated from Leduc Composite High School

  • have successfully completed the first year of a Bachelor of Education program or a college transfer program leading to a Bachelor of Education degree within the Province of Alberta and,

  • be currently enrolled in the second year of the Bachelor of Education program or the college transfer  program leading to a Bachelor of Education degree within the Province of Alberta.

Preference will be given to those students majoring in music.  Financial need will also be a factor in the awarding of the scholarship.

Application Procedures:

A personal letter of application for this scholarship must be sent no later than September 15th of the student’s second year in the Bachelor of Education program to:

Selection Process:

A Selection Committee will meet prior to October 15th of each year in which there are applications to consider.  The Selection Committee will consist of at least three individuals, drawn from the following:

  • the Principal of Leduc Composite High School (or designate)

  • the Chairman of the Board of Education, Black Gold Regional Division No. 18,

or the Superintendent, Black Gold Regional Division No. 18 (or designate)

  • the Staff Advisor to the Leduc Composite High School Student’s Union

The Selection Committee may decide to interview applicants or may make its selection based solely upon written letters of application.  It will set such procedures and requirements as it deems necessary from time to time.

The Selection Committee has the right to reject any or all applications in a particular year and need not make an award should it judge the quality of the applicants to be unacceptable.

The Selection Committee will meet annually with the Board of Education to report upon its deliberations and any recommendations that it has with respect to the administration of the scholarship.

Discontinuance of the Scholarship:

When, in the judgement of the Board of Education, Black Gold Regional Division No. 18, inflation has so devalued the principal amount that the scholarship award would be of little significance to a university student, the scholarship amount will be increased and the annual award continued until the principal amount of the scholarship has been depleted.  The scholarship will then be discontinued.
